Crips
Good morning everyone ! This time I want to talk about “ Crips “ . This film was made in 2004, so this is a new film relatively. To tell the truth, I have watched this movie before, then I was impressed and interested in a main character. Therefore, I selected this film.
First of all, I’m going to sketch out this movie. This title of this movie, “ Crips “ means name of a gang group in LA. Crips is the biggest street gang group in U.S and has 30,000 members. Its story is about a black man, Stanley “ Tookie “ Williams’ life, so this movie is a really true story. Williams is the founder of the murderous Crips gang. Jamie Foxx who got Academy Award last year played as Williams.
Secondly, I’m going to talk about cinematography. About 80 % of the actors on this film are black people, so we can see various black culture. For example, Hip-Hop music, tattoo, fashion style, Afro and so on. Also, this film doesn’t use CG, but use practical news scene, so I think this is a realistic.
Thirdly, I want to touch on story. When Stanley Tookie Williams was 9 years old, he moved to a suburb of LA. But there were many gangs and juvenile delinquents, so it was a very dangerous city. When push comes to shove, every men took on all comers without exception Williams. Police pretended to not knowing, therefore Williams thought this is just what dog-eat-dog world. Williams kept beating every black men and came to be respected by a lot of men. Afterwards, he formed Crips and became a king of gangs. And he threw his weight around in and out of LA. According to investigation, about 10,000 black people died by fight. In 1981, he killed 4 person and were put in San Quentin Penitentiary. He later became an anti-gang activist while on California’s Death Row, renouncing his gang affiliation, apologizing for the Crips founding, and co-authoring books and beginning programs to prevent youth from joining gangs. His book were a great draw for many teenagers in U.S, Europe, Africa and Japan too. Because of his activity, he nominated Nobel Prize for Peace 5 times and Nobel Prize for Literature 4 times. Nelson Mandela who is president in South Africa visited and encouraged to him.
Finally, I’m going to inform recent his life. The truth is he already died 2 days ago. I was very shocked. Williams executed in California at San Quentin Penitentiary near San Francisco, by lethal injection and declared on December 13, 2005 at 12:35 a.m. He was 51 years old. Many people including Jamie Foxx and other Hollywood stars campaigned to stop his death penalty, however the governor of California state, Arnold Schwarzenegger refused to spare the life of Williams. I’m very sorry his death.
THIRTEEN DAYS
This time, I watched " THIRTEEN DAYS " for the first time. Relatively, this is a new film. This story is about " Cold War " between the Soviet Union and the United States. So in this time, these two countries just came close to actual war. Accordingly, " THIRTEEN DAYS " was what is called time when not only American people but also people all over the world were shaking with the crisis in Cuba.
When I watched this movie, my first impression was each actor speak long lines. But I think it is a natural, because this films had to cover many topics, for example, politics, diplomacy, armament and so on. Therefore, this is a very realistic and powerful movie.
In Japan, cases similar to this crisis happend too. North Korea shot missiles to Japan and probably have nuclear bomb. So this is one of the most important things in diplomacy which Japanese goverment must solve.
I did not know about " Cold War " , but I could understand by watching this movie. I was enjoyed watching.
TORA ! TORA ! TORA !
This time, I watched "TORA! TORA! TORA! " for the first time. I think this film is very realistic and hard-edged. This film was collaborated by America and Japan, so I think this is described about Pearl Harbor very well from both America's and Japan's angles. Also, I was surprised such a realistic movie was made before 35 years.
Actually, Akira Kurosawa took charge of Japanese director at first. But, unfortunately, this project was frustrated. In addition, a famous Japanese actor, Kiyoshi Atsumi appear as a cook. Besides, about 33 million dollars was spend for making this film. So these attack scene were very powerful.
This movie was describrd faithfully about history, therefore, I could know about the war in the Pearl Harbor. It is said that president Roosevelt already had known Japan's plan before they broke away to Pearl Harbor. However, I don't know this is a true or not.
Although I think it is a little long, this film is a very good. I enjoyed watching it.
My Fair Lady
This time, I watched "My Fair Lady" for the first time. This movie is a long musical film. I think this is a good movie. Also, This film depict the upper ranges of society well. For instance, a beautiful hat and clothes.
Audrey Hepburn played as Eliza who is a flower seller. She had a rough tongue at the beginning. But, she was changed into a beautiful lady by a professor. She changed dramatically by through hard training. I was surprised and interested in her transfirmation.
I think this is what ia called a Cinderella story, so I think this is a amusing. Audrey Hepburn got an Academy Award, so this film is a good movie.
Gandhi
This time, I watched "Gandhi" for the first time. This movie suddenly starts off shocking scene, Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic who opposed his program. I was surprised and shocked. To tell the truth, I exactly have not known about Gandhi. But, through this movie, I knew that he was a great man. The Indian people called Mahatma, meaning Great Soul.
I think this movie is a very real and good. John, the actor, playing Gandhi, performed very well. Also, he had reduced his weight to be same Gandhi's weight and gotten tanned. Moreover, he had practiced how to talk.
Gandhi walked many things for India. Gandhi set out on his pilgrimage of peace in riot-wrecked Bengal to establish unity between the two sister-communities, Hindu and Muslim. His message was, "The cry of blood is barbarous."
I think he was a rare and geat man. The great theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein said of Gandhi, "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood."
Gone with the wind
This film, "Gone with the wind" , was produced in 1939. This time was in World War Ⅱ. But, this film was popular and loved by many people at that time. A theme of this movie is love and romance. I think this is a very interesting and good movie, but too long ! To tell the truth, I was bored with long story. I wonder that old films were long, compared with recent films.
This film was set in the Civil War, so U.S was divided on south and north. This war was cruetly and misery. Many people were killed and injured, so people lost many things and sorrowed. I could know about American history, especially the Southern States, by this film.
I was shocked by through this movie. It's a racial discriminatuion. American people disciminated against black people. For instance, people treated blacks as servants or slaves. Also, only black people warked in plantation. Moreover, this movie has some party scene, however no black people participated in.
I think we can know the times by watching movies, because movies reflect the times.
TROY
This film, TROY, was produced in 2004, so this is comparatively a new film. Brad Pitt played Achilles, the hero of this film, and Orlando Bloom acted Paris, the prince of Troy. This movie is very real and large scale, especially, battle scenes are really impressive with making full use of CG. Also, many people took part in this film. Because of being evaluated them, TROY was nominated for an Academy Award. Of course, I enjoyed watching it.
This scene is in 3200 years ago of the Mediterranean. There were many kingdoms with conflicting each other. Particularly, Sparta and Troy were one of strong kingdom. One day, Paris looted the princess of Sparta, so this is start of war between Sparta and Troy. Sparta had a strongest solder, Achilles. He had never lost enemies, so thanks to his remarkable activity, Sparta could spread territory. King of Sparta made an expedition to Troy to get back his princess. Needless to say, Achilles went to Troy. On the other hand, Paris and the princess loved each other, so Troy decided to fight against Sparta to defend the princess from Sparta. As a result, Sparta beat Troy.
Through the battles, this movie depicts love, honor, power, glory and bond. For instance, Achilles fought to leave his name on history. The bond between Achilles and his men. King of Sparta’s desire to power. Honor of dying in the war. Glory of kingdoms. And Paris fought for love to the princess, also Achilles loved a lady in Troy.
I was very excited, so this movie is one of best pieces for me. Besides, I could know about history of 3200 years ago. Therefore, I think this is a good movie.
